Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth in the jaw erupt usually around the late teens or early 20s. There are normally two wisdom teeth in the upper jaw and two in the lower jaw.

Wisdom teeth infection is a very commonly encountered problem in our dental clinic. Wisdom teeth infection occurs when there is not enough room for them to erupt. Pressure and pain occurs as these teeth try to come out, causing gum inflammation and difficulty brushing, Overtime bacterial build up on wisdom teeth leads to further teeth decay and gum infection

The symptoms of wisdom tooth infection include:

  • Reddened, inflamed gum alongside the wisdom tooth
  • Superficial or deep swelling and infections
  • Pain and fever
  • Pus coming from the gum line
  • Sore lymph glands under the jaw
  • Difficulty swallowing or restricted mouth opening

People with compromised immune systems can suffer serious complications from wisdom tooth infections. To prevent wisdom teeth infections keeps on coming back the wisdom teeth need to be removed.

Wisdom tooth extraction, where required, is best performed sooner rather than later. Our dentists are dental surgeons experienced in wisdom teeth removals. Wisdom teeth extractions can be performed in the dental chair under local anaesthetic or in the hospital under general anaesthetic if required, depending on the complexity of the situation.

Your mouth will be sore, swollen and prone to bleeding for up to a week after wisdom teeth removal.

When impacted wisdom teeth are left untreated, it may cause decay of the wisdom tooth as well as its neighbouring tooth. This may eventually lead to more complex and expensive treatment such as root canal treatment or extraction of the neighbouring tooth
